As part of the project "Improving the Protection of Children in Emergencies in Ukraine by Providing Safe Shelters, Food and Non-Food Items, and Psychosocial Support," the Medical Aid Committee in Zakarpattya purchased and delivered a shipment of household appliances to a modular settlement in Chernihiv Oblast, home to more than 180 internally displaced persons.

The shipment consisted of refrigerators, which have already been installed in the kitchens of the collective center and are being used by its residents. The modular settlement accommodates both local residents who were forced to leave their homes due to enemy attacks and people displaced from other frontline regions of Ukraine.

For many residents, what was meant to be temporary accommodation in the modular settlement has become a long-term home. A distinct social ecosystem has already taken shape there: adults go to work, children attend school and sports clubs, while older residents build their own social circles and tend to their households. At times, this daily routine is disrupted by russian drone attacks, the aftermath of which can be seen on some of the walls and doors. One of the settlement’s most urgent needs is therefore a safe shelter. Civil society organizations and responsible government institutions are working together to secure funding for its construction.

In May this year, the CAMZ team visited Chernihiv on a working visit. As part of the visit, they toured the modular settlement and met with volunteers from their partner organization, "The Unity of Chernihiv", who help coordinate the distribution of aid locally. Together with our partners in Chernihiv, the Committee has implemented several humanitarian initiatives, including support for healthcare facilities, food assistance for vulnerable groups, and efforts to help rebuild damaged homes, among other efforts.

As a reminder, last year CAMZ also provided essential household appliances to two temporary accommodation centers in Chernihiv, including stoves of various models and washer-dryers. This support helped slightly improve living conditions for people who were affected by the war and lost their homes.

The project "Improving the Protection of Children in Emergencies in Ukraine by Providing Safe Shelters, Food and Non-Food Items, and Psychosocial Support" is being implemented by the Charitable Organization "Charity Fund "Medical Aid Committee in Zakarpattya" with the support of "terre des hommes Deutschland e.V." and funding from the German Federal Foreign Office.
